Student Life at Tecnologico de Monterrey

I. Student Societies and Groups

Tec de Monterrey has a Student Development Department mainly engaged in promoting academics, sports, cultural, and social extra-curricular activities for our students with support of the Tec's resources. All student organizations at Tec depend on this department, and are developed by study areas, regions or nationalities, cultural inclinations, sports, or other interests.

As a campus student, you will be able to belong to the student society and a regional or foreign student society. If you wish to belong to a particular interest group, you need to contact this department for instructions and information.

The FEITESM (Federación de Estudiantes del Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey) organizes a number of traditional events such as:

•  Queen Crowning Dance

•  Song Festival

•  Fraternity Tree Ceremony

•  Lectures

•  Cultural festivals

•  Community service programs

•  Symposiums

•  EXPOTEC (a two-day exhibit where every Mexican state and foreign country represented at Tec shows samples of its music, handcrafts, products, and cuisine).

As a Tec student you can participate in all these events. We recommend that you join as many groups and organizations as possible to help you meet people, improve/practice your language skills and become accustomed to the school environment.

II. Events organized by the International Programs Department

Your most exciting experiences will involve the events organized by the International Programs Department. Our staff organizes a number of events and field trips for international students so they can learn more about Mexico and better adjust to their new student environment.

These events consist of visits to local museums and other tourist attractions, as well as cultural and social events. A few longer trips involve visits to a number of tourist resorts and cultural sites in Mexico .

Some local trips are free of charge, but you will have to pay for any kind of entrance fee into a museum, theaters, etc. Long trips have an additional cost and are optional. We advise you to consider bringing enough money for these long trips.

These are only a few examples of the events and trips we have organized in the past, both in regular terms and in summer sessions. We usually have only one long trip per academic period.

Local trips:

•  City tour

•  Garcia Caves

•  Horsetail Falls

•  Mexican History Museum

•  Contemporary Art Museum

•  ALFA Planetarium

•  Desert Museum

Long trips (examples):

•  Real de Catorce

•  Puerto Vallarta

•  Mexico City

•  Acapulco

•  Guanajuato

•  Zacatecas

Social and sporting events:

•  Welcome party

•  Sports Tournaments

•  Disco nights

•  Salsa nights

•  Farewell party

We also organize visits to local manufacturing plants and other businesses. International students get to learn first-hand about some interesting processes and also see the cutting-edge facilities in Monterrey plants. Your experience will be much more rewarding if you go on these trips, so please plan on taking advantage of them.
